ABOUT MOTHER OF MERCY HOSPITAL KYENGERA

Mother of Mercy Hospital Kyengera is the latest health care undertaking in the long list of health care services established by the Banabiikira sisters (Daughters of Mary).

The catholic religious institute, whose service to the less privileged dates way back in 1910 when it was founded by Bishop Henry Steicher a white Father and Mother Mechtilda a white Sister to play a role of motherhood to the childrenĀ  who were unable to be taken in for catechumen classes of adults at the time. Since then the institute has engaged in various charitable works in health care, education, evangelism sanitation and numerous social services rolled out to mainly the rural poor.

In health care in particular, this Religious Institute is the managing organization of some of the top private not for profit referral hospitals in Uganda and these are; Lubaga hospital, Kitovu hospital and Villa Maria hospital. Their enormous experience in pro- poor health has seen the Religious Institution setup three own health centers; Bwanda H/CII and Eye Clinic Kalungu District,. Kitaasa H/C III Bukomansimbi and Nawanyago H/CIII in Kamuli District not to mention the various Diocesan Health Centres in various parts of the country managed by the Religious Institutes members on behalf of the owners, and working with various international partners, to set up health care projects like the fistula repair projects for poor mainly at Kitovu Hospital to restore the dignity of the less fortunate mothers.

The religious Institute also boosts of starting up various training facilities for health care Human Resources in the fields of Nursing and Midwifery including their own St. Lawrence Nursing and Midwifery training School at Villa Maria , lab assistants and technicians.

It is on this basis, and on the identification of the challenges facing urban poor in health care seeking, particularly mothers and children, that this hospital was conceived to offer affordable quality to services to urban poor.
